The Anatomy of A Mystery Thriller

Writer's picture: Alisa KlingerAlisa Klinger

Bestselling author Dan Brown recommends the rule of three C’s. Dan Brown states, “I think this could be very, very helpful to anyone who sitting down and trying to outline and write a thriller.”

Contract- Add promises. You know something the readers don’t know, and you promise if they read the book they’ll find the following piece of information.

Clock-Create a time limit. Clock refers to the fact that when time running out it results in pressure. When this is applied to any character’s struggle, it creates much higher stakes, which will make the reading experience of the reader more interesting.

Crucible-give your hero only one path; one that’s most challenging. This is what makes the hero heroic.

Keep these three elements of writing in mind when outlining. You’ll be happy at the outcome.
